SUMMARY: North Carolina is currently one of 14 states that have not moved forward with Medicaid expansion including seven in the southeast. A recent study by a nonpartisan peer-review journal, Health Affairs, reveals that the other states in our region who have expanded eligibility are having better health outcomes.

The study reports that non-elderly low-income individuals have slightly lower levels of health decline in the southeastern states that have expanded Medicaid compared to those who have not. Multiple other studies have shown that between 450,000 and 650,000 people in North Carolina could benefit from Medicaid expansion.
